When the lights get brighter, so do the Eagles.
The No. 3 seed Montverde Academy baseball team delivered a dominant performance in front of a well attended home crowd Friday night, rolling past Foundation Academy 12-0 in five innings in the quarterfinal round of the 2026 Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 2A Region 2 Championship. The game ended early via the 10-run mercy rule—but not before MVA made it clear they're a team hitting their stride at exactly the right time.
From the opening inning, MVA set the tone.
The Eagles wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard, plating four runs in the bottom of the first to seize immediate control. That early surge only fueled what turned into a relentless offensive showcase. In the third inning, MVA broke the game wide open with a five-run explosion, highlighted by a towering grand slam from Max Irving that electrified the home crowd and pushed the lead to 9-0.
But the Eagles weren't finished.
With the game on the brink in the fifth, Alex Bello delivered the exclamation point—a three-run home run that brought the mercy rule into effect and sent MVA emphatically into the next round.
The offensive production was balanced and dangerous throughout the lineup. Irving led the charge, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs thanks to his grand slam. Bello added a 1-for-3 performance with two runs and three RBIs on his decisive homer. Brody Welborn was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a run, while Mauricio Zaa (2-for-3, two runs) and Andres Morillo (2-for-3, double, RBI) kept the pressure on from start to finish.
On the mound, Sid Goecke was just as dominant.
The southpaw tossed a complete five-inning shutout, allowing just one hit while striking out two and issuing no walks. Efficient, composed, and in control, Goecke set the tone early and never let Foundation Academy find any kind of rhythm.
With the win, MVAÂ advances to the regional semifinal round, where the Eagles will face either No. 2 seed The First Academy or No. 7 seed Santa Fe Catholic in a best-of-three series. Game 1 is set for Friday, May 1, followed by Game 2 on Saturday, May 2. If necessary, a decisive Game 3 will immediately follow Game 2.
If The First Academy advances, the series will be played in Orlando. If Santa Fe Catholic pulls the upset, the Eagles will host the series at Francisco Lindor Field.
