The nationally No. 9 ranked Montverde Academy boys basketball team used a dominant second half to defeat Sunrise Christian Academy 82-65 on Saturday night in Nike EYBL Scholastic play in the Air Capital Hoopfest in Wichita, Kansas.
The Eagles showcased its balance offensively, with five players scoring in double figures. Dhani Miller led MVA with 18 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists. Derek Daniels was perfect from the field, finishing with 17 points on 7-for-7 shooting, including 3-for-3 from the free throw line, and added a team-high eight rebounds.
Javion Tyndale and Joe Philon III each scored 14 points, with Tyndale also dishing out five assists, and Philon adding four rebounds and four assists. Oneal Delancy rounded out the balanced attack with 14 points of his own.
After trailing throughout the first half, MVA closed the gap late in the second quarter and went into halftime down just two, 39-37. Sunrise Christian had led by as many as 10 points in the second quarter, but the Eagles' intensity and efficiency began to shift momentum in the latter stages of the quarter.
With the score tied at 48 in the third quarter, MVA went on a decisive 10-0 run to seize control of the game. The Eagles took a 58-48 lead with just over a minute to go in the third. The Eagles outscored Sunrise Christian 23-12 in the third quarter and led 60-51 by the end of the period.
MVA extended the team in the final eight minutes of the game and led by 20 in the latter stages of the fourth quarter.
MVA shot an impressive 57 percent from the field (31-for-54) and 45 percent from three-point range (5-for-11). The Eagles also dominated the paint with a 54-16 advantage in points inside and controlled the glass with a 31-16 rebounding edge.
With the win, Montverde Academy improves to 10-5 overall and 4-3 in Nike EYBL Scholastic play. The Eagles return to action on Sunday at the Air Capital Hoopfest, facing Veritas at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time (11:00 a.m. Central Time).
