Two defending state champions. One opening-night showdown. And a statement win for the Eagles.
The Montverde Academy girls soccer team kicked off its 2026–27 season in impressive fashion Tuesday evening, scoring twice in the first half and holding off Lake Mary High School for a hard-fought 2–1 victory at Dan Newlin Injury Attorney Stadium.
In a matchup featuring the reigning FHSAA Class 3A champion Eagles and Class 7A champion Rams, MVA combined an aggressive attack with a determined defensive effort to start its season 1–0.
Veronica Solano and Lola Rey supplied the goals, while goalkeeper Alyssa Strausbaugh recorded three saves to help the Eagles secure the victory.
Lake Mary delivered the first warning less than three minutes into the match, sending a shot off the crossbar. But MVA quickly found its footing and began putting pressure on the visiting Rams.
That pressure paid off in the ninth minute. After the Lake Mary goalkeeper saved an initial shot by Rey, Solano pounced on the rebound in front of the net and finished to give the Eagles a 1–0 lead.
Rey doubled the advantage in the 20th minute with a spectacular strike. Getting to a loose ball approximately five yards inside the penalty area, she blasted a shot into the upper-right corner to put MVA ahead 2–0.
The Eagles carried that cushion into halftime, but the defending Class 7A champions made the second half a battle. Lake Mary converted a direct free kick in the 64th minute to trim the deficit to one, setting up a tense finish.
MVA held firm, protecting its lead through the final whistle to claim an opening-night victory against one of Florida's premier programs.
The Eagles finished with a 10–5 advantage in shots and struck the crossbar twice themselves. MVA kept the ball in Lake Mary's end for much of the evening, sustaining pressure and giving the Rams plenty to defend.
Tuesday's showdown could also offer a preview of a postseason meeting. The FHSAA's new Open Division will bring together the top eight teams regardless of classification, creating a potential path for the two defending champions to meet again with even more at stake.
The challenges continue Friday, when MVA hosts another formidable opponent, Ponte Vedra High School, at Dan Newlin Injury Attorney Stadium at 7:00 pm.
Junior Varsity: Bella Kelley scored both MVA goals as the Eagles fell 3–2 to Lake Mary in the junior varsity matchup.
