Montverde Academy baseball closed out the season-opening Eustis Tournament with a 13-6 victory over Tavares High School on Thursday afternoon at Eustis High School.
After a scoreless first two innings, the Eagles' offense erupted for five runs in the top of the third inning. Tavares answered with two runs in the bottom half, but Montverde Academy responded immediately, pushing across another five runs in the top of the fourth to take a commanding 10-2 lead and control the game the rest of the way.
Brody Welborn led the offensive charge with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Miguel Ramos collected two hits and scored twice, while Andres Morillo drove in two runs and crossed the plate twice. Santi Marin had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs.
On the mound, Mauricio Zaa earned the win after tossing 4.0 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out six. Raja Sandhu provided solid relief, working the final 3.0 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits with four strikeouts.
With the win, Montverde Academy improved to 2-1 on the young season. The Eagles return to action on Tuesday with a road matchup at IMG Academy, scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch.
