From SIMA to Champion: The Journey of Jackson Wälti
Long before he was lifting a professional trophy, Jackson Wälti was learning how to live on his own.
A member of the SIMA Class of 2018, Wälti's journey from Montverde Academy to the professional game is a testament to early sacrifice, discipline, and preparation. From college success at the University of Pittsburgh to being selected 56th overall in the MLS SuperDraft by Austin FC, and eventually signing with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the USL Championship, every step traces back to the foundation built at SIMA.
"SIMA played a massive role in preparing me for my time at Pitt and everything that came after," Wälti said.
At SIMA, he was exposed daily to a high-level training environment while balancing school, an experience that mirrored the demands of college soccer. "Being exposed to a high-level training environment while still balancing school helped me understand early on what it takes to compete at the next level," he explained. The expectations were high. The standards were consistent. And the structure demanded maturity.
But perhaps the most defining part of his development happened off the field.
"One of the biggest things, though, was moving into the dorms at 14 and living away from my parents," Wälti shared. At an age when most teenagers are just beginning high school, he was already navigating independence. "That experience forced me to grow up quickly, learn independence, and manage my own time."
By the time he stepped onto campus at Pitt, he wasn't overwhelmed by being away from home, he was prepared for it. "By the time I got to college, being away from home felt normal," he said, noting that the transition felt easier compared to many freshmen experiencing that separation for the first time.
That head start in independence translated directly to his performance and leadership in college. The habits built at SIMA didn't fade, they strengthened.
"The discipline, structure, and resilience I built at SIMA carried straight into my career at Pitt and now into the professional game."
After his collegiate career, Wälti earned his opportunity in MLS before continuing his professional journey in Pittsburgh. On November 22, 2025, the Riverhounds captured the first USL Championship title in club history, a historic milestone and a full-circle moment in the city where his collegiate career flourished.
From leaving home at 14 to becoming a professional champion, Jackson Wälti's story reflects what long-term development truly looks like. The foundation built at SIMA didn't just prepare him for the next level. It prepared him for every level that followed.
