The Montverde Academy softball team continued its strong start to the season on Friday, defeating Winter Springs High School 6-3 in a winner's bracket matchup on day two of the 2026 Montverde Academy Invitational Softball Tournament (MAIST). The victory improves the Eagles to 4-0 on the season and sends Montverde Academy to the MAIST championship game for the fourth consecutive year.
Montverde Academy will face IMG Academy in the tournament title game Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
The Eagles delivered when it mattered most, highlighted by a clutch performance from Addie Poe. She went 2-for-4 at the plate and delivered the decisive blow, a towering grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning, finishing with four RBIs.
Montverde Academy's offense stayed consistent throughout the game, with Elena Friedman going 2-for-4 and scoring twice, while Andrea Gomez and Audrey Vivino each added two hits. Cali Flowers and Missy Odom also delivered key RBIs to help fuel the Eagles' effort.
After three scoreless innings, Winter Springs broke through with an unearned run in the top of the fourth to take the lead. The Eagles answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning when Flowers lifted a sacrifice fly to score Kanora Diederichs and tie the game at 1-1.
Montverde Academy took its first lead in the fifth inning when Odom hit an RBI single that brought home Friedman to make it 2-1.
Winter Springs briefly regained control with two runs in the top of the sixth, but the Eagles responded in dramatic fashion. With the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning, Poe crushed a grand slam to put Montverde Academy back in front for good and secure the Eagles a spot in the MAIST championship game.
Nevaeh Williams earned the win in the circle, tossing a complete game. She allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out nine.
