Baseball Earns 3-2 Win over Cornerstone Charter Academy in District Semifinals

Montverde Academy baseball is headed to the district championship after a gritty 3-2 win over Cornerstone Charter Academy in the semifinal round of the 2026 Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 2A District 6 championship on Thursday evening.

With the victory, the No. 1-seeded Eagles improve to 15-8 overall and will face No. 2-seeded The First Academy in the district championship on Friday at 6:00 p.m. at Francisco Lindor Field on the Montverde Academy campus.

In Thursday's win, MVA struck first in the bottom of the second inning when Tank Chavous hit a triple that brought home Jonathan Valdes to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Moments later, Brody Welborn followed with an RBI single to score Chavous and extend the advantage to 2-0.

Cornerstone Charter Academy responded in the top of the fourth inning, plating two runs to even the score at 2-2.

The Eagles wasted little time answering back. In the bottom of the fourth, Pablo Borbely came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Max Irving, who drove a deep fly ball to the warning track in left-center field to put MVA back on top, 3-2.

The biggest moment of the game came shortly after.

Cornerstone Charter Academy loaded the bases with one out, threatening to take the lead away from the Eagles. But MVA turned to freshman pitcher Drew Fenell out of the bullpen in a high-pressure situation. After falling behind 2-0 in the count to the first batter he faced, Fenell showed poise and struck him out. He then struck out the batter after that to escape the jam and preserve the Eagles' lead.

From there, Fenell shut the door, and the Eagles held on for the win.

Andres Morello earned the win on the mound, going 4.1 innings while allowing two runs on five hits and recording two strikeouts. Fenell picked up the save, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three.

MVA will now look to capture its first district title since 2023 on Friday night on its home field.
