Montverde, Fla. (September 8, 2026) – After helping lead the Montverde Academy girls volleyball team to a thrilling five-set victory over perennial state power Winter Park High School, senior Kristina Vargas has been named the Montverde Academy Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 6.
In MVA's only match of the week, Vargas turned in an outstanding all-around performance in the win. The senior setter finished the match with 30 assists, 20 digs and three service aces, helping MVA earn one of its biggest victories of the young season.
For the season, Vargas has recorded 86 assists, 51 digs and five service aces through 17 sets.
Now in her third season with the Eagles, Vargas is also closing in on a significant milestone in the Montverde Academy record book. She enters this week with 731 career assists, leaving her just 115 assists shy of the program's all-time record of 846.
A resident of Atenas, Costa Rica, Vargas brings a unique background to Montverde Academy. She spent the first eight years of her life living in Kenya before moving to Costa Rica and eventually making her way to MVA.
Away from the volleyball court, Vargas is an active member of the Montverde Academy community. She participates in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, African Student Union and Hispanic Student Union.
When asked what she loves most about Montverde Academy, Vargas pointed to the people who have made the school feel like home.
Looking beyond her time at Montverde Academy, Vargas has big aspirations for her future, with the senior hoping to one day become a CEO.
Vargas and the rest of the Eagles return to the court on Tuesday, September 8 for a match at home against Mount Dora High School at 6:00 pm.
