MONTVERDE ACADEMY TENNIS HEAD COACH JAIME ONCINS SELECTED AS BRAZILIAN DAVIS CUP CAPTAIN
Oncins will coach the Brazilian National Team in the 108th Annual Davis Cup.
March 18, 2019 (Montverde, FL) – Montverde Academy's Head Tennis Coach Jaime Oncins has been selected by the Brazilian National Tennis Federation to be Captain of the Brazilian National Tennis Team for the premier international tournament in men's professional tennis, the 108th Annual Davis Cup. Known internationally as the "World Cup of Tennis", Oncins will have the opportunity to select the top tennis players from Brazil to participate in the Davis Cup Tournament and compete against other national teams such as Germany, Italy, and Switzerland.
The Finals of the Davis Cup will take place on the indoor hard courts at the Caja Mágica in Madrid, Spain from November 18 until 24. The format of the tournament was changed for the 2019 year after being bought out by FIFA World Cup athlete Gerard Pique. Now, the World Group competition between 18 nations will take place at one location, all in one week, with the teams divided into six round-robin groups of three teams each. The winners of the groups and the two best second-place finishes will advance to the quarterfinals. The series between the teams in this stage will feature two singles matches and one doubles match. The biggest change from the past tournaments will be that the matches are changed from the best of five sets to the best of three.
"To be selected as the Davis Cup Captain of the Brazilian National team is the biggest honor a coach can receive," said Head Tennis Coach Jaime Oncins. "I used to play in the tournament several years ago, so I know how much this means to not only the Brazilian players but the country as well."
Oncins competed in the Davis Cup in 1991 and participated in the tournament for 11 years. To this day, Oncins is the only Brazilian athlete to reach the semifinal of the Davis Cup match twice since their debut in 1932. Oncins also competed in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games defeating Michael Chang who was ranked No.2 in the world at the time and competed in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. In those same years, Oncins reached the Davis Cup semifinals with one of the top Universal Tennis Rankings in the world.
As Head Varsity Coach of the Montverde Academy Tennis Academy, Oncins has led the boys team to two FHSAA State Championships Titles in 2017 and 2018 and a National Championship Title in 2019 at the DecoTurf High School Tennis Team Championships (DHSTTC). For the girls team, Oncins has propelled the Lady Eagles to a Runner up FHSAA State Championship finish in 2018 and seventh place National finish at DHSTTC. Although Oncins has garnished a wide range of accolades both on the court and as a coach, the accomplishment Oncins values the most at MVA is the NCAA Division I, II, and III athletic scholarships the student-athletes have received under his wing in the past few years.
"At Montverde Academy, we make sure the athletes understand that academics come first and then tennis second," said Oncins. "We can win all the Championship Titles this country has to offer but none of it means anything if our students do not value their education. I am proud that the tennis academy recognizes and teaches that principle every day."
