MVA Boys Tennis Team Returns Home as 2019 National Champions

The boys varsity tennis team made history this past weekend winning the DecoTurf High School Tennis Team Championships in their final match against Florida powerhouse St. Andrews 6-0 on March 15-16 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.1229

The boys team went up against a stacked St. Andrews team in the final match as their roster was led by 5-Star sophomores Jacob Lowen and Ellis Short and 5-Star 8th grader Leanid Boika. Other top players included the nation's 19th ranked sophomore and Blue-Chip recruit Baylor Sai (Montgomery Bell), 4-Star senior and Air Force commit Jonathan Mascagni (Milton). Despite the incredible talent on St. Andrew's tennis team, the Eagles dominated them in six straight sets earning their first National Championship finish. The big win marks the first National Title ever accomplished by any tennis team at Montverde Academy and they also secured their invitation to next year's National Tournament.

The girls team also competed in the National Tournament and placed seventh overall out of 32 competitive teams. The girls side was headlined by five defending state champions in a 12-team field that included four-time Girls A Division Champion, Baylor and Cambridge who was the 2018 Girls A Division finalist and Georgia Class 6A state finalist.

"I couldn't be more proud of the way our teams prepared and competed in the National Tournament," said Head Coach Jaime Oncins. "The win represents a lot for the tennis academy and the school. It is the first time the tennis teams competed in a national event and having this success in our first ever national event shows the level of the tennis program we have at Montverde Academy. All year the team trained hard and focused on their game. Most importantly, they had much more success in the classroom. All their work has paid off."

The pathway to a first National Title wasn't an easy one for the Eagles. The boys team faced Briarwood Christian from Birmingham, AL who was known for their "dynamic duo" of 4-Star sophomore Luke Wolf and 5-Star 8th grader Ethan Carr. Despite their highly ranked players in the state of Alabama, the MVA boys team won 7-2 in their first match of the National Tournament.1230

In the quarterfinals, the Eagles went up against Myers Park who was led by seniors Mark Dillon and Sam Dean. The match was dominated with strong sets from Bernardo Costa and Bruno Nunes and the Eagles ended up winning 8-1. They would move on to the semifinal match against two-time Boys A Division Champion and defending Illinois Class 2A State Champion Hinsdale Central out of Illinois. Hinsdale is led by Tulane signee Joseph Daw and a trio of 4-Star rated freshman in Mujtaba Ali-Khan, Noah Hernandez, and Dean Kamenev. Despite their stacked team and numerous earned titles in the past seasons, the Eagles proved to be a championship contender as they cruised past the reigning champions 8-1 solidifying themselves as the team to beat at the 2019 DecoTurf High School Tennis Team Championships.

The rest is history.
