After his official head coach selection earlier in the year of 2019, Montverde Academy's Head Tennis Coach Jaime Oncins led the Brazilian National Tennis team to their first win in the Americas Group 1 division over Barbados 3-1 securing their spot in the 2020 Davis Cup Rakuten Qualifiers in March.
"Using the energy from the crowd in the right times was crucial in the wins of our doubles and singles matches," said Oncins. "As a former player who competed in the Davis Cup for many years, I was able to speak from experience and my athletes were able to understand, that in the Davis Cup, it's about playing as a team rather than the individual."
Winning at the highest level is a trait that Oncins has exemplified throughout his entire tennis career. In 1991, Oncins competed in the Davis Cup and participated in the tournament for a total of 11 years. To this day, Oncins is the only Brazilian athlete to reach the semifinal of the Davis Cup match twice since their debut in 1932. Oncins also competed in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games defeating Michael Chang who was ranked No.2 in the world at the time and also competed in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. In those same years, Oncins reached the Davis Cup semifinals with one of the top ATP rankings in the world.
After an impeccable tennis career, Oncins was hired at Montverde Academy in 2015 as the Head Tennis coach for the high school tennis teams. Under his tenure, Oncins led the boys team to two consecutive undefeated seasons, three District Championships, two Regional Championships, and two State Championships. In 2018, Oncins transformed the high school tennis program into a tennis academy providing for domestic and international student-athletes. In their first year as a tennis academy, the boys team won their first National Championship Title at the 2019 National Championships at DecoTurf High School Tennis Team Championship. For the girls team, Oncins has propelled the Lady Eagles to a runner up FHSAA State Championship finish in 2018 and a seventh-place finish at the DecoTurf National Tournament Championship.Â
Although Oncins has garnished a wide range of accolades both on the court and as a coach, the accomplishment Oncins values the most at MVA is the NCAA Division I, II, and III athletic scholarships the student-athletes have received under his wing in the past few years.Â

"At Montverde Academy, we give the same importance in academics as well as athletics," said Oncins. "We can win all the championship titles this country has to offer but none of it means anything if our students do not value their education. I am proud that the tennis academy recognizes and teaches that principle every day."
