MVA Varsity Basketball Finishes Perfect Regular Season

With a championship win over IMG Academy 67-46 at the St. James Invitational, the Montverde Academy varsity basketball team ended their regular season with a perfect record of 25 wins and zero losses.

The championship win marked the third consecutive time this season that the Eagles overpowered the Ascenders who were nationally ranked in the top 15. The Eagles have won four in-season tournaments including, the City of Palms Championship, the John Wall Invitational Championship, the Montverde Academy Invitational Championship, and the St. James Invitational Championship. MVA also avenged their championship loss against St. Benedicts Prep in 2017 at the St.James invitational, losing by a buzzer-beater.

MVA had five players average 10 points or better in the tournament. They were led by rising sophomore Dariq Whitehead who averaged 15 points and included FSU commit Scottie Barnes (14.3 points), OSU commit Cade Cunningham (12.7 points), UARK commit Moses Moody (12.0) and UNC-Chapel Hill commit Day'Ron Sharpe (10.0).

The St. James Invitational All-Tournament Team was announced after the championship game and MVA had three players that headlined the roster: Cade Cunningham, Jakai Robinson (National Christian Academy), Scottie Barnes, Mark Williams (IMG Academy), and Day'Ron Sharpe.

"We have a great group of talented players that have great chemistry with each other and with the game of basketball," said Head Coach Kevin Boyle. "They work hard in practice every day and all share the same goal, to win a National Championship.

ESPN recently released their national rankings for high school basketball and have Montverde Academy as the consensus No.1 ranked team in the USA. (see image below)
