The Montverde Academy boys' basketball team, the No. 3 seed in the 2022 GEICO National tournament, defeated No. 6 seed AZ Compass, 72-63 in the opening round on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Eagles have advanced into the semifinal round and will play against No. 2 seed IMG Academy on Friday at 2:30 pm.

In Thursday's win the Eagles led throughout and were led by Malik Reneau with a game-high 19 points. Reneau was one of five Eagles to score in double figures as Dariq Whitehead, Dillon Mitchell and Jalen Hood-Schifino added 12 points each, while Dravyn Gibbs Lawhorn scored 10.

Mitchell and Reneau had a team co-high eight rebounds, while Whitehead offered nine assists.

MVA outrebounded AZ Compass by a 33-26 margin and outscored them 40-24 on points in the paint.
