The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) has released its brackets for the 2022 regional softball championships, and Montverde Academy has earned the No. 2 seed.
The Eagles will host No. 7 seed Cornerstone Charter Academy in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday, May 11 at 7:00 pm at the MVA softball complex. If Montverde Academy wins, the Eagles advance into the semifinal round and will host the winner between No. 3 seed Astronaut High School and No. 6 seed South Sumter on Tuesday, May 17. If MVA goes beyond that, they will play for the regional championship on Friday May 20, with an opportunity to play in the state championship rounds on May 25 and 26 in Clermont.
MVA enters the regional tournament after winning the District 7 championship last week. The Eagles won both the semifinal and championship rounds 2-1, both in dramatic walk-off fashion. In the semifinal round win on Tuesday, MVA beat Trinity Prep in the bottom of the seventh inning on a wild pitch followed by a throwing error by the Trinity Prep catcher that allowed the winning run to score. Then last Thursday, the Eagles, who were down 1-0 going into the bottom of the seventh, tied the game to send it into extras, before winning in the bottom of the thirteenth inning with a two-out rally.
The Eagles enter the regional tournament with a 17-8 overall record. They have a team batting average of .301, and are led by Danika Spinogatti who leads the team in batting average (.389), doubles (10) and shares the team lead in triples (3). Meanwhile Yani Guzman, who is second on the team in batting average (.316), leads the team in runs batted in (23), home runs (2) and shares the team lead in triples (3). In the circle, the Eagles have a team ERA of 1.15 and a WHIP of 1.02. Nevaeh Williams leads the team in wins (6) while sporting a 0.79 ERA. She has pitched a team-high 71.1 innings and has struck out 80 batters.
