After an 8-2-2 regular season this year, the Montverde Academy girl's soccer team has earned the No. 1 seed for the 2023 Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) district tournament.
The Eagles have a bye in the first round because they are the No. 1 seed and will play in the semifinal round on Friday, January 27 against No. 4 seed Windermere Prep at 7:00 pm. The game will be played at Lake Highland Prep. Windermere Prep earned the right to play the Eagles after defeated Cornerstone Charter Academy 8-0 in their quarterfinal round game on Wednesday. Should the Eagles win on Friday, they advance to the championship round and will host the winner between No. 2 seed Lake Highland Prep and No. 3 seed The First Academy on Wednesday, February 1 at 7:30 pm
"I think all of the girls are excited about the opportunity to compete for a state championship, a district championship, a regional," MVA head coach Robbie Aristodemo said, "This is our first year back after three years and will be our fourth time competing in an FHSAA event so we are very excited about this."
This season, MVA has been led in goals by Antonella Mazziotto with six, while Estefania Gonzalez is second with five. The duo also shares the team lead with four assists each. Genesis Perez Watson has played 840 minutes in net and has allowed nine goals while making 40 this season. She has a 0.857 goals allowed average this season.
The last time, MVA competed for an FHSAA state championship was during the 2018-19 season when the Eagles won the 4A championship that season.
After districts, the Eagles hope to advance into the regional tournament which will begin on Tuesday, February 7 with the quarterfinals. The regional championship is scheduled for Tuesday, February 14, with the chance of advancing to the state championship with the semifinal round on Friday February 17, followed by the 3A state championship game on Wednesday February 22 at Spec Martin Stadium in DeLand, Florida.
