Five Boys’ Basketball Players Recognized by Naismith Trophy; Cooper Flagg Named Player of the Year

Montverde, Fla. (March 8, 2024)— Upon the naming of the 2024 Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy Boys' High School All American teams, Montverde Academy had one boys' basketball players named on either the first, second or third team, along with two earning honorable mentions.

Boys' basketball player Cooper Flagg was named a Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy Player of the Year and was a first team All American, while teammate Derik Queen was named to the second team and Liam McNeeley was named to the third team. Fellow teammates Asa Newell and Robert Wright earned honorable mentions.

The five Eagles were recognized for having great seasons that included MVA going a perfect 30-0 this regular season and winning 27 of those games by double digits as the team now awaits its anticipated top seed into the 2024 Chipotle High School National Championship taking place in Brownsburg, Indiana (just outside of Indianapolis) from April 4 – 6.

Flagg, a Duke University commit, earned the Player of the Year and earned a spot on the first team after averaging 16.1 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, while leading the team with 1.6 steals per game and 2.7 blocked shots per game.

Queen, a Maryland commit, earned a spot on the second team after leading the Eagles in scoring with 16.4 points per game, while averaging 7.6 rebounds per game. He also shot 68 percent from the field (207-for-303) and 79 percent from the free throw line (79-for-100).

McNeeley averaged 12.7 points this season, while leading the team in free throw percentage at 80 percent (56-for-70) and three point field goal percentage at 46 percent (64-for-139).

Newell, a Georgia commit, averaged 12.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, while leading the Eagles in field goal percentage at 69 percent (131-for-191).

Wright, a Baylor commit, led the team in assists per game at 6.0, while finishing second on the team in three point percentage at 43 percent (30-for-70) and third in the team in steals per game at 1.2.

This past regular season, MVA outscored its opponents by an average of 86.0 – 54.7, and the Eagles have been the No. 1 ranked team in the United States the entire year.
