Luna Taboas went 3-for-3 at the plate and blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to break a scoreless tie that accounted for the only runs of the game.
Meanwhile, starting pitcher La'Breah Sands allowed two hits and struck out 11 batters to lift the Montverde Academy softball team to a 2-0 win over Trinity Prep in the championship game of the 2024 Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 3A District 7 tournament Thursday evening in Umatilla.
The win improves the Eagles to 22-4 overall this season, and the district championship is the eleventh in a row for the softball program and the twenty-second postseason championship for Montverde Academy athletics during the 2023-24 academic year.
Overall, the Eagles had seven hits. Leila Susaia was 2-for-3 with a double, while Colby Reish and Ari Jimenez had one hit each.
MVA softball, who is ranked No. 7 in the entire state of Florida and No. 2 in FHSAA 3A, will now await the bracket release on Friday afternoon to see who it will play in the regional tournament. Regional play begins with the quarterfinals on Wednesday, May 9.
