Will Moss continued his stellar season on Thursday morning, winning the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Regional Championship at Holloway Park in Lakeland. The two-time district champion became a regional champion for the first time, crossing the finish line in 15:59.96, more than 36 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher (16:36.75).
With the win, Moss earns an automatic qualifier into next Saturday's state championship meet at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee. Teammate Salvatore Scelfo also turned in a strong performance, placing 14th overall out of 112 runners with a time of 17:10.93. Scelfo will await word to see if he receives an at-large bid into the state's biggest high school cross country race.
On the girls side, Montverde Academy earned an automatic team qualifier after finishing a close second overall out of 16 teams. The Eagles scored 86 points, just six behind regional champion Mount Dora.
Lyla McMillen led the way with a 5th-place finish in 19:53.26, followed by Alafair Scelfo in 12th (20:45.83) and Federica Perez in 15th (21:07.39). Amaris Munya placed 21st (21:28.21), and Samantha Schulze rounded out MVA's top five with a 35th-place finish (22:27.82).
Also competing for the Eagles were Alon Scelfo (37th, 22:29.19) and Zara Liles-Henry (41st, 22:41.10), helping secure the team's spot in the state championship meet next weekend in Tallahassee.
