The Montverde Academy boys and girls golf teams put together strong opening rounds on Friday as day one of the Florida High School Athletic Association Golf State Championships wrapped up at Mission Inn Resort & Club.
Competing on the El Campeón course, the boys' team sits in fourth place out of 16 teams after posting a 298 (+10), 11 strokes behind The First Academy who currently leads. Byungchan Yoon, who fired an impressive 69 (-3) to position himself near the top of the individual leaderboard was the Eagles' top scorer on Friday. Meanwhile Hung Khanh Le and Carlo Guzman each carded solid 75s (+3), while Oscar Ricketts rounded out the scoring with a 79 (+7).
On the Las Colinas course, the girls turned in an equally strong performance. The Eagles are tied for second place of 16 teams after recording a 289 (+5) in the opening round. Circle Christian currently leads after a 281 (-3) opening round. Cynthia Yang paced the group with a polished 70 (-1), followed closely by Cassy Zhu at 72 (+1), Bonnie Wu at 73 (+2) and Michelle Jing Su at 74 (+3) to keep MVA firmly in the hunt going into Saturday
Both teams return to Mission Inn on Saturday starting at 7:30 a.m. with championship contention well within reach.
