The boys lacrosse team returned from spring break in dominant fashion Tuesday night, defeating the Lake Minneola High School 11-5 in an impressive display of teamwork and offensive firepower.
Despite some early rust in the first quarter, the Eagles found their rhythm and took control of the game after a slow start.
"Coming back from spring break, we needed to break some rust off, but overall it was good to see different kids scoring," said head coach Chris Spaulding.
The first quarter saw the Hawks pressuring the Eagles' defense, but the Eagles stood strong, denying several scoring opportunities.
In the second quarter, MVA's offense found its stride. Gavin Ionelli scored the first goal of the game (assisted by Nate Kuhn), to break the scoreless tie, and the Eagles never looked back.
Ionelli struck again with a beautiful setup from Tanner Moore, followed by a goal from Blake Kuhn to give Montverde a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Eagles carried that momentum into the third quarter, as Alex Junkhe opened with a powerful goal.
Nate Kuhn, Evan Flanagan, and Corbin Pierce each added to the tally, extending the Eagles' lead. Ionelli then capped off the quarter with his third goal of the night, pushing the score to 8-2 after three periods of play.
MVA stayed relentless in the fourth, with Ionelli securing another goal, followed by two more from Blake Kuhn to seal the victory. The Hawks managed to add a few late goals, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
With the victory, the Eagles made a strong statement as they look to carry their momentum into the remainder of the season. MVA is now 6-4 and winners of four in a row, and the Eagles return to the field on Friday, March 21 for a game against Lake Highland Prep at 6:30 pm.
