Max Irving ripped a double in the bottom of the eighth inning, bringing home Danati Fronduto to seal Montverde Academy's fantastic 7-6 comeback win over Harmony High School on Wednesday night at Francisco Lindor Field.
The Eagles brought home the bacon; overcoming a 5-0 deficit early to wipe out Harmony High School's lead and secure their seventh straight victory. The Eagles are now 10-4 overall this season.
Irving was the star of the game all evening. His game winning hit solidified his night. He went 4-for-5 with two doubles and four runs batted in. He also was the game winning pitcher after tossing a shutout inning in the top of the eighth while striking out two.
"The game was good, we started out a bit rough, but we adjusted back, and came back and secured the dub," Irving said after the game.
Pablo Borbely, in his varsity debut, played an immediate key role in the game. He went 1-for-2 with two walks, a run and two runs batted in.
With the Eagles down 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth, he hit a two-run single to cap a four run rally that pulled the Eagles to within a run. Carlos Feliciano and Rainer Garcia added crucial RBIs in the pivotal fourth inning that got MVA back into the game.
Later in the game with the Eagles trailing 6-5, Borbely, who walked to start the inning, scored from third on a wild pitch to tie the game.
The Eagles had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh. With Carlos Feliciano on first, Garcia layed down a sacrifice bunt to move Feliciano to second. But with no one on Harmony covering third, Feliciano attempted to go third, but the throw by the Longhorns first baseman to the pitcher was caught on the run and the tag was made simultaneously to end the threat.
Danati Fronduto was dominant on the mound. He pitched 4 ⅔ innings of relief and allowed one (unearned) run, while striking out 11, including a span in which he struck out seven out of eight in one stretch.
The Eagles will look to make it eight in a row on Thursday with a game at Lindor Field against Lake Highland Prep at 7:00 pm.
