The Montverde Academy softball team defeated Bartow High School 12-2 in the semifinal round of the winner's bracket before losing 3-2 in eight innings in the championship round at the Kissimmee Klassic on Saturday.
In the win over Bartow, the game was tied 2-2 into the fourth inning when the Eagles exploded for six runs to break the game open. MVA then scored four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to win via the five inning 10-run mercy rule.
Danika Spinogatti was 2-for-3 with a triple, a home run and six runs batted in. Her home run, a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth, was her seventh of the season which set a new Montverde Academy softball record for most home runs in a season. Additionally her six runs batted in puts her over 100 in her career, becoming the first softball player in MVA history to eclipse 100 career runs batted in.
Meanwhile, Leila Susaia went 2-for-2 with a double, while Elena Friedman added a home run and two runs batted in.
In the game against Orange Beach, MVA broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning, before the nationally ranked Makos tied it in the bottom half before eventually going into extra innings.
The Eagles scored a run in the top of the eighth to take a 2-1 lead, but a pair of runs by Orange Beach gave the Makos the championship game win.
Luna Taboas was 2-for-3 with a run, while Leila Susaia was 1-for-3 with a double and run batted in.
The Eagles are now 16-2 on the season and return to action on Tuesday for a game at home against Trinity Catholic at 6:00 pm.
