Electric Night in The Nest: Eagles Edge The Rock in MAIT Thriller

A near-capacity crowd. A student section that never sat down. Noise that echoed from opening tip to final buzzer.

Friday night inside The Nest was everything high school basketball is supposed to be, as Montverde Academy edged The Rock School 70-69 in a winner's bracket showdown on day two of the 2026 Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament (MAIT) presented by Discover Lake County.

From the first possession, the energy in the building was unmistakable. Montverde Academy fans — led by an electric, loud, and relentlessly cheerful student section — created a playoff-like atmosphere that made every possession feel massive. And the game on the floor matched the environment perfectly.

Neither team could pull away. The contest featured nine ties and 14 lead changes, with most of the drama unfolding in a heart-pounding second half. Every basket was answered. Every defensive stop drew a roar. Every whistle raised the tension another level.

With the Eagles down 69-68 and just 17 seconds remaining, Dhani Miller put the night on his shoulders, attacking the lane and finishing a clutch driving layup to give the Eagles the lead for good. One final defensive stand followed, as The Rock School's last possession came up empty, sending the Montverde Academy bench and crowd into celebration.

Miller delivered a game-high 19 points to go along with seven rebounds, leading the Eagles when it mattered most. Derek Daniels was a force in the paint with 16 points, nine rebounds, and three emphatic blocked shots. Oneal Delancy chipped in 13 points, while Javion Tyndale controlled the tempo all evening, posting 12 points, six rebounds, and a game-high nine assists.

The victory pushes Montverde Academy to 13-5 on the season and marks the Eagles' fifth straight win — but just as importantly, it cemented Friday night as a reminder of what makes MAIT special. High-level basketball. High-stakes moments. And an atmosphere that those in attendance won't soon forget.

Montverde Academy now advances to the MAIT championship game, set for Saturday at 7:00 p.m. against Faith Family Academy.
