The Montverde Academy boys basketball continued its impressive play on Saturday evening, knocking off Brewster Academy, 76-71, in a Nike EYBL Scholastic showdown on day one of the St. James Event in Springfield, Virginia.
With the win, Montverde Academy, ranked No. 2 nationally, improves to 17-5 on the season and extends its winning streak to nine games. The Eagles also improve their conference record to 7-3.
The Eagles showcased their balanced attack with five players scoring in double figures. Javion Tyndale led the way with 18 points and five assists, while Oneal Delancy added 17 points. Dhani Miller chipped in 16 points, Joe Philon III scored 12, and Derek Daniels contributed 11 points while pulling down a team-high seven rebounds.
Montverde Academy was efficient offensively, shooting 60 percent from the field (27-for-45), and controlled the interior with a commanding 42-28 advantage in points in the paint. The Eagles also capitalized at the free throw line, going 16-for-21 (76 percent), while Brewster Academy attempted just nine free throws on the night.
Montverde Academy built an early cushion, leading 24-17 after the first quarter and extending the advantage to 44-28 by halftime. The Eagles held by as much as 22 points early in the third quarter. But Brewster Academy battled back in the second half and made a game of it, even holding the lead itwice in the final three minutes of the game.
The Eagles responded when it mattered most. Down 71-70, MVA closed out the game on a decisive 6-0 run over the final two minutes to secure the five-point victory.
Montverde Academy returns to action on Sunday at 5:00 p.m., facing La Lumiere on day two of the St. James Event.
