Resilient. Focused. Relentless.
The Montverde Academy boys basketball program has officially risen to the No. 1 ranking in the nation, capping a season defined by growth, toughness, and elite-level play.
The Eagles' journey to the top wasn't without early challenges. Montverde Academy opened the season on November 21 with a 22-point loss to Southeastern Prep Academy, and after beginning the year ranked No. 6 nationally, the Eagles slipped out of the Top 25 following a pair of home losses at the Nike EYBL Scholastic Sunshine Classic on December 5–6.
Since then, Montverde Academy has been nothing short of dominant.
The Eagles are now 18-5 overall and have won 18 of their last 20 games, putting together one of the most impressive midseason turnarounds in the country. During that stretch, Montverde Academy recorded two statement victories over teams that were ranked No. 1 in the nation at the time — first defeating Prolific Prep at the City of Palms Classic on December 21 and later knocking off Spire Academy on February 6.
Those wins didn't just turn heads — they signaled that the Eagles are in championship form.
"It took us taking some losses early to grow, to figure each other out, to figure out whose roles belong where, and who needed to be playing where. and we've just taken it one day at a time," said head coach Steve Turner. "Like our model has been all year, find a way and we're going to do it brick by brick. And this group has done an unbelievable job of trusting in our staff, believing in each other, checking their egos at the door, and finding a way to be successful."
In league competition, Montverde Academy sits in first place in the Nike EYBL Scholastic with an 8-3 overall league record and a perfect 6-0 mark in the EYBL Scholastic's East Division.
"Our goal has been from day one to be in the Nike EYBL Scholastic tournament and give ourselves a chance to win and then also hopefully get a nod to get into the Chipotle Nationals. And that those two things happen, this team is more than achieved what they have set out to do," Coach Turner said. Â
It has also been a complete team effort on the part of the Eagles, who have four players averaging double figures. Montverde Academy has been led offensively by Dhani Miller, who is averaging 15.4 points per game, followed closely by Oneal Delancy at 14.7 points per game. Joe Philon III is averaging 11.5, followed by Derek Daniels at 10.5.
Their production, combined with the team's depth, defensive intensity, and unselfish play, has fueled a surge that has carried the Eagles to the top of the national rankings.
What makes this achievement special is not just the ranking — it's the response. After early adversity, the Eagles locked in, trusted the process, and elevated their level of play. Day after day, with each practice and game, they have shown composure in big moments and delivered against the best competition in the country.
Now, Montverde Academy has worked its way back to the top of the high school basketball landscape.
The Eagles aren't just playing great basketball — they're playing with purpose.
