For the second edition of the Senior Spotlight, Sports Media student Kendall Payne speaks with boys basketball star Joe Philon III. Joe is in his first year with the Montverde Academy boys national basketball team where he has made a big impact on the court both on offense and defense and has been a major factor to MVA's currently No. 1 national ranking.

As the 2025–26 basketball season enters the homestretch, Montverde Academy's boys basketball team continues to make waves on the national stage, and senior forward Joe Philon III has been a key part of that success. The 6-8 Tampa, Florida native brings size, versatility, and skill to one of the most competitive high school basketball programs in the country.
Philon joined Montverde Academy for his senior year after starring at Blake High School in his hometown, where he earned recognition as one of Florida's top basketball players in the Class of 2026. Before transferring, he posted impressive numbers that caught the eye of scouts and coaches.
"Blake helped shape me into the player I am today. I'll always be grateful for that foundation, but I wanted to challenge myself at the highest level," Joe said.
Now donning the Montverde Academy purple and gold, Joe continues to showcase his complete game. He has given MVA balanced production on both ends of the court, scoring with flashy dunks, crashing the boards, and making plays for his teammates in big moments, assisting the Eagles to their now No. 1 national ranking. Joe credits the team culture for pushing him forward.
"At my public school I was usually the best player so I could get by on talent," he said. "At Montverde Academy, everybody was that guy on their old team. Practices are way more intense, the game is faster, and every mistake gets exposed."
While statistics tell part of his story, (11.5 PPG, 5.4 RPG) Joe's impact extends beyond the box score. As a senior on a loaded roster, he brings maturity and experience to the team. Known for his excellent work ethic and high intensity, he helps set the tone in both practices and games.
"I just want to do whatever it takes to win," Philon shared. "Whether that's scoring, defending, or talking on the bench, my job is to make my teammates better."
Montverde Academy has tradition of producing top college and professional talent, and Joe's presence this season adds another chapter to that legacy as he prepares for life after Montverde. Philon has received plenty of interest from colleges. No matter where he lands, his leadership and steady presence this season will be remembered as a defining part of his senior year and legacy with the Eagles.
