The Montverde Academy boys basketball team delivered a statement performance on Friday evening, defeating the nation's top-ranked team, Spire Academy, 66-52 at the Dr. Pepper Classic in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
With the victory, Montverde Academy improved to 15-5 overall and 6-3 in Nike EYBL Scholastic play, while recording its second win this season over a team ranked No. 1 in the nation at the time of the matchup. Montverde Academy earned a marquee victory over Prolific Prep on December 21 when Prolific Prep held the top national ranking.
From the opening tip, the Eagles set the tone with energy, physicality, and composure. The Eagles led most of the contest, taking a 14-8 advantage at the end of the first quarter and carrying a 28-25 lead into halftime after a competitive first half.
Montverde Academy seized full control coming out of the locker room. The Eagles opened the third quarter on a 9-4 run to stretch the lead to 37-29, igniting momentum that carried through the remainder of the game. Montverde Academy led the entire second half, showcasing disciplined defense and efficient offense against one of the nation's most talented rosters.
Dhani Miller led the way with an outstanding double-double, finishing with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Oneal Delancy added 19 points and seven rebounds, while Joe Philon III contributed 13 points and seven rebounds in a balanced and complete team effort.
The win further underscores Montverde Academy's consistency on the national stage, as the Eagles continue to rise to the occasion against elite competition throughout the season.
Montverde Academy will return to action on Saturday for day two of the Dr. Pepper Classic, facing Boyd-Buchanan at 4:00 p.m.
