A dominant pitching performance and timely hitting helped the Montverde Academy softball team earn a 3-0 victory over East River High School on Tuesday evening and improve to 7-1 on the season.
The game remained scoreless through the first three innings before Montverde Academy broke through in the top of the fourth. Missy Odom got things started and later came around to score when Nevaeh Williams delivered an RBI single to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Moments later, Andrea Gomez lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that brought home Cali Flowers, extending the lead to 2-0.
MVA added an insurance run in the fifth inning when Odom singled to drive in Colby Reish, making the score 3-0.
That was more than enough support for Williams, who was outstanding in the circle. The right-hander pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits while striking out 13 over seven innings.
Williams also contributed at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Odom finished 1-for-2 with a walk, a run scored, and an RBI, while Mylah Cardona added a strong offensive performance, going 2-for-3.
Montverde Academy returns to action on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. when the Eagles host Phillips Academy.
