Montverde Academy softball delivered one of its most impressive wins of the season on Wednesday afternoon, knocking off previously undefeated Baker County, 5-2, on the road.
The Wildcats entered the contest at a perfect 17-0, but the Eagles wasted no time setting the tone. MVA jumped ahead in the top of the first inning when Addie Poe launched a two-run home run to give MVA an early 2-0 lead.
The Eagles extended that advantage in the fifth inning with three more runs. Cali Flowers brought home Elin Gunkel with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. Shortly after, Carly Howard came through with a clutch double, driving in Poe and Audrey Vivino to push the lead to 5-0.
Baker County attempted to rally in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs, but MVAÂ shut the door from there to secure the 5-2 victory.
Nevaeh Williams was outstanding in the circle, tossing a complete game, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out 11.
Williams also contributed at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Poe had a big day offensively as well, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, two runs, and two RBIs.
With the win, MVA improves to 15-3 on the season.
The Eagles will look to carry the momentum into Friday's matchup at Parrish Community, with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
