Montverde Academy softball broke through late and leaned on another dominant performance in the circle from Nevaeh Williams to defeat Cheverus High School, 4-0, on Monday evening at the MVA Softball Complex.
In what was a tightly contested pitcher's duel for much of the game, both teams struggled to generate offense early. MVA's only hit through the first five innings came in the bottom of the first, when Williams helped her own cause with a single.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Eagles capitalized on a two-out rally. Colby Reish and Elena Friedman worked back-to-back walks to spark the offense. Then Cali Flowers followed with a hard ground ball single up the middle, bringing home Reish for the game's first run.
The next batter, Audrey Vivino, delivered the decisive blow with a line-drive home run to left field, extending the Eagles' lead to 4-0 and providing much appreciated breating room heading into the final inning.
Williams was outstanding in the circle from start to finish. The right-hander tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits while striking out 14 batters in seven innings of work.
MVA, now 16-4, returns to action on Tuesday evening for another game against Cheverus at the MVA Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
