For the first time in the history of the Tennis Academy at Montverde Academy, the boys and girls tennis teams will compete in the DecoTurf High School Tennis Team Championships on March 15-16 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The 12th Annual DecoTurf High School Tennis Team Championships is a national invitational tournament that hosts the nation's top high school tennis teams including 450 tennis players that have gone on to play tennis in NCAA Divison I colleges, 80 All-Americans, and 138 Team State Champions.
The MVA tennis team was invited by the High School Tennis Championship Organization after their performances at the FHSAA State Championship matches in the past two seasons. The boys team won back to back titles in 2017 and 2018 and the girls team won the runner up trophy last year, making their first-ever championship appearance in the history of the girls program. Â
The tournament format will consist of a Dual Match Format with six singles and three doubles per dual match. For singles, the match will be best of three sets and super tiebreak for the third set. Doubles will be in an eight-game pro set. This year marks the first time in tournament history that the tournament field will not include either the defending Boys A Division or Girls A Division Champion. The National's 2019 participants will include a record 21 defending team state champions and 15 defending state finalists. There are 24 seniors that have already committed to play collegiate tennis competing in the event including MVA's very own Love Star Alexis committed to Middle Tennesee State University, Giovanna Jallas committed to Concordia College and Vasco Belaunde committed to Copin State University.
"We are really well prepared and the team has been looking forward to this moment ever since the start of the season," said Head Coach Jaime Oncins. "It's going to be something new for the team but they are looking forward to the challenge and all the great competition that will be there."
