Montverde, Fla.— The hard work is continuing to pay off for the players on Montverde Academy's boys' and girls' basketball teams as six Eagles, including five from the boys' team and one from the girls' team, have been selected to play in the Jordan Brand Classic in Chicago, Illinois on April 15.
Skyy Clark, Jalen Hood-Schifino, Dillon Mitchell, Malik Reneau and Dariq Whitehead from the boys' team, along with Janiah Barker from the girls' team were selected after having spectacular seasons in 2021-22 which led to both teams being selected to compete in the GEICO National Championship tournament later this month.
The Jordan Brand Classic is scheduled to be a part of a doubleheader on April 15 with the girls' game slated to tip-off at 5:00 pm, followed by the boys' game at 7:00 pm, and the games are being played at Hope Academy in Chicago.
The Jordan Brand Classic selection for several of MVA's players is just the latest of personal accomplishments this season. Recently Mitchell and Whitehead were selected to play in the McDonald's All-American boys' game and Barker in the girls' game. Whitehead was also the winner of the Naismith Trophy for the nation's most outstanding boys' high school basketball player and was named to the All-Naismith first team. Meanwhile Mitchell was named to the second team and Hood-Schifino to the third team. Barker was named to Naismith girls' second team.
The Jordan Brand Classic is now in its twenty-first season. Honoring Michael Jordan's legacy, the Jordan Brand Classic is a celebration of the next generation of basketball stars and regularly features the best and brightest high school talent in the country. This marks the first year the game has taken place since 2019. The game has been canceled the past two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
