Montverde, Fla. (November 7, 2023)—Montverde Academy Department of Athletics has announced that girls' swim team member Emily Santos has been named the Montverde Academy Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending November 5.
Santos earned the award after taking on the best the state of Florida had to offer and beating them all as the senior captured gold in the 100 yard breaststroke at the 2023 Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) state championship meet in Ocala on Saturday, November 4.
Santos earned the win after blazing through the pool in a final time of 1:01.44, a new personal best, helping the Eagles finished fifth overall finish out of 42 teams at the event.
A twelfth grader and native of Panama City, Panama, Santos becomes the first student-athlete in Montverde Academy to win the award more than once. She was named the Student-Athlete of the Week on October 3.
Though still in high school, Santos has already faced the best the world has to offer in the pool. She represented her native country in the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. She has also competed in other prestigious events around the world, including the World Aquatics Championships, and the Central American Games. Most recently, she competed in the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile where she finished ninth overall in both the 100 meter and 200 meter breaststroke events.
A model student, Santos is serving as Head Prefect at MVA this school year. She is also a part of the Model UN team, the Art's Club and AP art studio class. Santos has committed to compete collegiately at the University of Virginia Tech. Her career ambition is to work in marketing.
Santos played a big role in the success of the girls' swim team in 2023, helping the Eagles to a 5-0 overall record in dual meets, and champions of the Citrus League, FHSAA Class 1A District 4 and FHSAA Class 1A Region 2.
