The Montverde Academy boys' cross country team and girls' cross country team finished second out of five teams in their respective races at the 2022 Citrus League Championship held on the Montverde Academy campus on Wednesday afternoon.
On the boys' side, the Eagles tallied 33 points, nine points higher than Lake Highland Prep who won the event with 24 points.
Individually, senior Riley Novack stole the show. Not only did he win the race by finishing first of 47 boys, but completed the grueling course in 16:55.6, which was 48.6 seconds faster than the second place finisher. Meanwhile teammate Will Moss finished third overall and second on the Eagles in 17:57.0. Cooper Shaban finished ninth overall and was the third Eagle finisher in 18:57, while teammate Anthony Picciano finished tenth overall and fourth on the Eagles in 19:06.7. Colton Cardwell rounded out the scoring by finishing fourteenth overall in 19:53.2.
Salvatore Scelfo finished sixteenth overall in 20:20.7, while Laven Parker was twentieth in 21:08.8. Jackson Balls was twenty-first overall in 21:13.9, while Leonard Polcaro was twenty-sixth overall in 22:40.4. Nathan Diaz finished the race in twenty-ninth in 23:37.7.
On the girls' side, the Eagles earned 51 points, while Bishop Moore won the event with 19.
Michelle Smith was the top Montverde Academy finisher and was second overall of 43 runners in 21:00.0. Lyla McMillen was seventh overall and second for the Eagles in 23:39.4. Natalie Nesmith finished eighth overall and was the third for MVA in 24:03.8, while Isabella Kissler was the fourth MVA finisher and sixteenth overall in 26:11.3. Shivani Patel was fifth for MVA and was twenty-first overall in 27:29.0. Leigh Anna Waters finished twenty-fourth overall in 28:00.6.
The Eagles will now turn their attention to the Florida High School Athletic Association races, starting with the district meet on Saturday, October 22.
