Led by seventh grader Alafair Scelfo, who was the overall winner, the Montverde Academy girls cross country team won the Citrus League championship for the second year in a row as the Eagles finished first of four teams at the league championship race in Winter Park on Wednesday afternoon.
The Eagles top five scorers finished in the top 12 to win as a team with 28 points.
Scelfo, who was one of just nine middle school competitors, finished first overall among 50 overall runners in 20:51.50.
Meanwhile, fellow teammate and seventh grade student, Alexandra Fraser was the second finisher for the Eagles and was fourth overall in 21:24.1.
Additionally, seventh grader Angelica Wolfe was the third fastest for Montverde Academy, while finishing fifth overall in 22:08.90.
Federica Perez was fourth for the Eagles, while crossing the finish line eighth overall in 22:36.70.
Zara Liles-Henry rounded out the top five Eagle scorers, while finishing 12th overall in 23:45.90.
Also competing for the Eagles were Alon Scelfo who was 22nd overall in 24:32.90. Izzy McMillen was 33rd overall in 28:13.80, while Noor Cheema was 34th overall in 28:15.70 and Riya Gupta was 35th overall in 28:21.
Montverde Academy girls cross country will look to keep up the momentum at the next race, the 2024 Florda High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) District Championship meet on Thursday, October 31 at the Sand Hill Scout Reservation in Spring Hill.
