Montverde, Fla. (February 6, 2024)—Montverde Academy Department of Athletics has announced that girls' weightlifting team member Elena Friedman has been named the Montverde Academy Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 4.
Last week, Friedman made Montverde Academy girls' weightlifting history by becoming the first student-athlete in MVA girls' weightlifting annals to qualify for the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) state championship meet. She qualified in the traditional category (bench press plus clean & jerk lifts) by finishing in the top twenty overall in her weight class in the entire state of Florida in it. She scored a 260 (125 lbs. bench press and 135 lbs. clean & jerk) to tie for seventeenth overall.
More specifically, her score of 260 earned her a fourth place finish at the Region 3 championship.
A tenth grader, Friedman is very active in her community. She is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Key Club, Lifestyle Medicine, Student Council and Eight Waves. She is also very involved in the church she attends.
Her favorite subject is Epidemiology, and she loves MVA because of its challenging curriculum and high level teams within the athletics department. She aspires to be a Pediatric Oncologist or Orthopedic Surgeon.
A two-sport athlete, Friedman is also a member of the MVA softball team. Prior to attending MVA, she was a member of the softball team at Foundation Academy where she amassed a career .376 batting average as a Middle School student playing on the Upper School team.
The FHSAA girls' weightlifting state championship is scheduled for Friday, February 16 and Saturday, February 17 at the RP Funding Center in Winter Haven, Florida.
