It was another frigid evening in Montverde, this time in a battle of two nationally ranked girls soccer programs.
The undefeated and third nationally ranked Montverde Academy girls soccer program took on a formidable opponent in Somerset Academy, nationally twenty-first ranked in the latest poll on MaxPreps.
Though the Eagles played well, the win by Montverde Academy on Thursday did not come without a shred of luck as well.
The visiting Cougars outshot the Eagles 17-12 overall, and some of their scoring opportunities missed the net by less than an inch literally. One Cougar scoring attempt clanked off the crossbar and about four others hit the post.
The Eagles made better of their opportunities and scored a pair of late second half goals to break a 1-1 tie and earn a 3-1 win.
Freshman Brianna Burkhalter broke the tie with a goal in the sixty-eighth minute, before senior Reese John connected on an insurance goal in the seventy-first to secure the win.
The late goals by the Eagles came less than five minutes after Somerset Academy tied the score. The Eagles had a 1-0 lead before the Cougars tied the score at 1-1 with 16:30 to go in the second half.
MVA scored the first goal of the game in the tenth minute when Luisa Tannus found the mesh after collecting a through ball by Joy Palacios.
The Eagles are now 14-0-0 on the season after the win and wrap up their 2024-25 regular season next week when they host the annual Girls Soccer Showcase (GSS) on January 17 and 18 on campus.
